The Lost Mayan Banquet

A theatrical dinner of dubious archaeology: a Mayan priest and his hopeless apprentice reconstruct a ceremony from a “newly discovered” codex.

The story

The host is a solemn, exaggerated and dramatic Mayan priest; his apprentice, K'iya, ruins part of the ritual with mistakes, misinterpretations and an obsession with drama.

According to the codex, the path to the underworld is found through food… and the final revelation is that the underworld is life today.

How it works

Each guest receives a colored napkin with a mission and a glyph: archaeologists seek its meaning, dancers join the ritual and interpreters try to convince the priest their figure is perfect.

The activities are “The Oracle of the Four Directions,” “The Dance of Dots and Bars” (the Mayan number system) and “The Ritual of Wise Smoke,” a copal cleansing after dessert.

The characters

  • The Mayan priest or priestess: solemn, exaggerated and very dramatic.
  • K'iya: the apprentice who gets everything wrong and shares incorrect facts.

What's included

  • Suggested menu: sopa de lima, Mayan pib (pit-roasted chicken or beef), tortillas and thick cacao with honey and vanilla
  • Two costumed hosts
  • Ceremonial music
  • Three participatory activities
  • Glyphs and missions for each guest
  • Symbolic copal cleansing

What you take home

  • History, humor and participation in one night
  • Group bonding through mystical and comic activities
  • A memorable atmosphere for social media

History and culture in every scene

As in all our experiences, the hosts' dialogue and the event's activities are written with real information about Mexican history and culture. You have fun and, without even noticing, you learn. The hosts explain the origin and meaning of the legend or tradition, and where the symbols, rituals and customs that appear during the night come from.
