La Llorona's Dinner: “The Banquet of Tears”

A night-time theatrical dinner of folklore and dark humor: a banquet that becomes a support group for a legend tired of crying. What did La Llorona really lose?

The story

Two hosts — guardians of the myth — guide the experience: one represents tradition and the voice of the people; the other is La Llorona herself.

Throughout dinner, guests uncover clues, take part in ridiculous, cathartic and symbolic activities, and help La Llorona realize that maybe she isn't crying for what everyone thinks.

How it works

Four acts: “The Banquet of Tears” (guests witness the myth), “The Anonymous Support Group” (dinner turns out to be an intervention), “The Clues of Grief” (symbolic objects that don't fit the official story) and “What Did She Really Lose?”, the final reveal.

The ritual moments are comic and symbolic: nothing truly esoteric.

The characters

  • The narrator: guardian of tradition and voice of the people.
  • La Llorona: the legend in person, exhausted after centuries of tears.

What's included

  • Two costumed hosts
  • Themed dinner (3 courses or reinterpreted folk tapas)
  • Progressive story with revelations
  • Sound design
  • Symbolic materials for the activities (papers, chests, letters, objects)

What you take home

  • A powerful, funny reinterpretation of Mexican folklore
  • Laughter, catharsis and reflection without solemnity
  • A story you'll remember and retell

History and culture in every scene

As in all our experiences, the hosts' dialogue and the event's activities are written with real information about Mexican history and culture. You have fun and, without even noticing, you learn. The hosts explain the origin and meaning of the legend or tradition, and where the symbols, rituals and customs that appear during the night come from.
