The Forbidden Dinners of the Mesoamerican Gods

A dinner of mythology and divine humor: Tezcatlipoca and Xochiquetzal gather guests for a secret dinner of the gods, with oracles, challenges and offerings.

The story

On arrival, each guest draws a numbered stone that sets their seat. Tezcatlipoca appears amid smoke; Xochiquetzal walks in behind him, correcting him.

Between courses come stories of Tláloc and the other gods, oracle readings and challenges for the mortals. At the end, Tezcatlipoca delivers an epic, funny finale.

How it works

The “Stones of Destiny” assign seats; in “Sacred Mockery,” Tezcatlipoca dares the audience to make fun of him; the tamales hide a number and Xochiquetzal reads the “tamale oracle” at each table.

Dessert brings “The Offering to the Gods”: tables compete to create a mini offering with flowers and seeds. The winners receive an amulet.

  • Xochiquetzal: flirtatious, brilliant and out of patience with Tezcatlipoca.
