Descent into Mictlán: A Mezcal Tasting in the Underworld

A mezcal tasting show: when the copal is lit, guests fall into the Aztec underworld. Each mezcal is a level of Mictlán, and only the trials bring them back.

The story

In the Mexica (Aztec) worldview, Mictlán is the underworld where souls travel through several levels full of trials.

The archaeologist, now possessed by the guide of souls, announces that the only way back to the land of the living is to pass the gods' trials. Succeed and you escape; fail and you stay in the Aztec underworld forever.

How it works

Each mezcal in the tasting represents a level of Mictlán.

At each level, guests solve a different challenge to pay their tribute and move toward the exit.

The characters

  • The Archaeologist: a mezcal expert and host of the tasting.
  • The Guide of Souls: the spirit who possesses him and leads the descent.

What's included

  • Theatrical show with two hosts
  • Mezcal tasting by levels
  • Varied challenges at each level

What you take home

  • Learning to taste mezcal
  • Discovering the souls' journey to Mictlán

History and culture in every scene

As in all our experiences, the hosts' dialogue and the event's activities are written with real information about Mexican history and culture. You have fun and, without even noticing, you learn. The hosts explain the origin and meaning of the legend or tradition, and where the symbols, rituals and customs that appear during the night come from.

Format and customization
