Maximilian and Carlota: “Casting for the Imperial Banquet”

A theatrical dinner at Chapultepec Castle, 1864: Empress Carlota holds a casting call to find the Empire's cooks, and guests compete in absurd challenges.

The story

Guests arrive as hopefuls for the imperial kitchen. They don't come to dine: they come to prove they can survive onions, the Mexican language and Viennese ridicule.

Amid waltzes, Franco-Mexican dishes and absurd challenges, a historical satire unfolds where the table is a cultural battlefield and the audience learns that governing Mexico also happens through the stomach.

How it works

Each table is an imperial kitchen brigade. The challenges: “The Imperial Tear” (composure and emotional resilience… or at least faking them), “Overseas Pronunciation” (the culture clash, out loud) and “The Dessert Waltz” (an elegantly absurd group finale).

At the end, the emperors deliver their imperial verdict.

The characters

  • Emperor Maximilian: naive, curious and charmingly out of place.
  • Empress Carlota: intelligent, commanding and subtly ironic.
